Bath house
Bath house
These are the remains of a public bathhouse that stood close to the harbor pier. It was a service provided for seafarers, along with port facilities like trading posts, repairs, storage, and maintenance.

Hippodrome
Hippodrome / Circus
This edifice, whose location perfectly matches Flavius Josephus’s description, was built for the inauguration of city in 10/9 B.C.
This hippodrome (circus, in Latin), was the venue for the Actian Games instituted by King Herod in honor of the Roman emperor Augustus.
The games were held every four years, and included horse - and chariot-races, athletics, gladiatorial combat and hunting.
Did the Building Serve Other Purposes As Well?
In the Greek-speaking eastern part of the Roman Empire, these spectacles as well as sprint races were held in a building known as a stadium.
Historical sources on Caesarea mention a stadium where Jewish, and later, Christian prisoners were sent to their death fighting in the arena as gladiators or as prey for wild beasts.

The source of much of present day knowledge of the styles and building methods of the classical world of Greece and Rome is the work of the Roman architect and engineer Vitruvius, who wrote his major text, De Architectura, some two thousand years ago.
The architecture of this region combines Hellenistic and Roman traditions with local and imported materials, all of which was adapted to local conditions.
This garden presents a collection of architectural artifacts discovered during the excavation of Caesarea, or found by chance.

Caesarea:
City, Harbor
City, Harbor
Caesarea was founded by King Herod in the late 1st century BCE as a port city and the maritime gateway to his kingdom. Its name reflected its character: a typical Roman city, offering entertainment and pleasures, food and amusements. The monumental harbor allowed the city and its citizens to develop business and trade relations with cities of the Empire and other lands beyond.
In the 4th and 5th centuries CE, with Christianity now the official religion, Caesarea was at its height. Communities developed alongside the important Christian center in the heart of the city. Form the 12th century, Caesarea passed from hand to hand – Muslims and Crusaders – until its conquest and destruction by the Mamluk Sultan Baybars in 1265. Its ruins provided building material for later settlements.
From the early 1950s until today, more and more of Caesarea has been revealed. The joy of discovery and the treasures that surface never cease to surprise.

The Roman Well
Herod's Palace
Some sixty lead scroll fragments dating to the 4th. C.A.D., probably execration tablets and binding spells, were recovered from this well, where they had been intentionally thrown as a magical practice. In his address on the dedication of the Holy Sepulchre in 335 A.D., Eusebius, Bishop of Caesarea, firmly condemned these widespread practices and what he called “curse tablets of forbidden sorcery”.

A refined palace with a swimming pool, once stood here. In 58 A.D. The Apostle Paul, accused of having caused a riot, was sent to Caesarea to be tried by the governor. Being a Roman citizen, Paul demanded to be heard at the Emperor’s court. He sailed to Rome from Caesarea’s harbor. There he was tried and a few years later executed.

Crusader Fortifications
Crusader Fortifictions
The fortifications visible today were built anew by Louis IX, king of France, who came to the Holy Land with the Sixth Crusade in the 13th century. They represent exemplary Gothic-European military architecture. The Eastern gate was the main gate of the Crusader city. Apparently, the fortifications were built on top of or as a restoration of previous fortifications with had been destroyed by the Ayyubid sultan Salah ad-Din (Saladin) in 1187. Actually, Muslim travelers describe Caesarea as a well-fortified city with a citadel, and archaeological excavations have exposed fortifications remains which can be dated to the period of the governor Ahmad Ibn Tulun, at the end of the 9th Century.

Caesarea in the Middle Ages
Crusader Fortifictions
In the course of the 7th century, Caesarea’s population started to decrease. Large areas of the city were abandoned, and were used only as burial grounds and as a source of building stones. The perimeter of the city shrank and was similar to the one visible today – that of the Crusader city. Like other coastal cities – Arsuf, Jaffa, Ashkelon, Gaza – Caesarea became a ribbat (a seaside fortress for guarding the coast, garrisoned by troops trained in the spirit of the Jihad), which served as a shelter for the local population during periods of danger.
During the Abbasid and Fatimid periods, Caesarea once again flourished as a city of commerce and industry, and Muslim travelers extolled its beauty.
The Crusades started in the 11th Century. The Crusaders brought with them European architecture and their faith. Once again, Caesarea was a Christian city.
From 1101 to 1265, the city passed several times from the hands of the Crusaders into those of the Muslims, - at times thoroughly abandoned, until its final fall in 1265 to the forces of the Mamluk sultan Baybars.

Caesarea Nymphaeum
Crusader Fortifictions
The nymphaeum was the public fountain that stood at the center of ancient Caesarea as one of the city’s main monuments, and was situated at the intersection where the city’s main street meets the Herodian port.
The nymphaeum had a decorative fountain, provided drinking water and was also a place where residents of Caesarea and its visitors could congregate.
The structure consists of a monumental wall. Marble statues are incorporated in its façade and a pool and fountains are located at the foot of it. In the Herodian period the nymphaeum was integrated in the northwestern corner of the temple’s bema - a large and magnificently built platform upon which the main temple stood in the Roman period and the Byzantine church afterwards. The pool went out of use in the Byzantine period and was replaced by another building, and paved road was constructed in front of it.
